Three excerpts, three different fires.
"I have my mother's will. It reads that I am to be the sole heir of her estate. All the land, the chattels, even the sheep are all mine. I am not two days from burying her alongside my father, my two brothers and my twin sister. The graves were ceremonial except for a few ashes. The will, which was put down on flame-resistant parchment was one of three things that survived the fire. I wear one of the items, a ring around my neck, my reminder of the once great House of Night my mother led. The other item was a red scarf which had been hand dyed by my sister Ciprina as a gift before she passed."
"This idea comforted Gregory in a way he had never felt. It created in him, a new world, one that was based on possibilities instead of tangibles. This world could shift and take new form. It was like his morning porridge that spilled on the ground reaching out in every direction across the floor, endlessly searching for a new country to explore."
"Wasn't that the deal, she thought. That he would put up with her mess but she would not tolerate his. Her mess had only grown since he departed. The custodian husband she had was ironically missing when she needed him most. Her image in the mirror painfully reflected all of her cracks. She could only stand to look for a couple seconds at a time."
